SEO vs AEO vs GEO: What’s the Difference? (2026 Guide for Malaysian Businesses)
By Ben Yeoh, Founder, OMG Launch ·
Search used to mean ten blue links. Today, a buyer in Petaling Jaya looking for an accounting firm might get their answer from a Google AI Overview, a ChatGPT conversation or a Perplexity summary — and never visit a results page at all.
That shift has produced three overlapping disciplines: SEO, AEO and GEO. Here’s what each one means, how they differ, and how to prioritise them.
What is SEO?
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the practice of improving a website so it ranks higher in search engines like Google and Bing for queries that matter to your business.
It rests on three pillars:
- Technical — can search engines crawl, render and index your pages quickly?
- Content — do your pages genuinely answer what searchers want?
- Authority — do other reputable sites link to and mention you?
SEO success is measured in rankings, organic traffic and, most importantly, leads and revenue.
What is AEO?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) is the practice of shaping content so engines can lift it directly as the answer — in featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistants and Google AI Overviews.
AEO is mostly about format:
- Headings written as the actual question (“How much does SEO cost in Malaysia?”)
- A direct 40–60 word answer immediately underneath
- Lists for processes, tables for comparisons
- Structured data such as
FAQPage,HowToandOrganization
What is GEO?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is the practice of making your brand the source generative AI assistants — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Claude — cite and recommend.
GEO goes beyond your own website. Large language models form their view of a brand from everything they read: your site, directories, review platforms, news coverage, forums and listicles. So GEO combines:
- Entity clarity — consistent facts about who you are, what you do and where
- Citable content — definitions, statistics with sources, original data
- Off-site mentions — appearing in the sources AI already trusts
- Prompt tracking — measuring mentions and accuracy across assistants
SEO vs AEO vs GEO at a glance
| Aspect | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in results | Be the extracted answer | Be cited & recommended by AI |
| Where it shows | Google & Bing listings | Snippets, PAA, voice, AI Overviews | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot |
| Main levers | Technical health, content, links | Question-led structure, schema | Entities, mentions, citable facts |
| Measured by | Rankings, clicks, leads | Snippet & Overview ownership | AI share of voice, citations |
| Time to impact | 3–6 months | Weeks to months | Weeks (live retrieval) to months (model memory) |
How they work together
Think of it as a stack:
- SEO is the foundation. If your site is slow, blocked or thin, nothing else works — AI retrieval systems rely on the same crawlable web.
- AEO is the shape. Well-structured answers are easier for both Google and LLMs to quote.
- GEO is the reach. Mentions across the wider web make AI confident enough to name you.
Running them as separate projects usually means duplicated work. Running them as one programme means every page you publish does three jobs.
How Malaysian businesses should prioritise
For most SMEs we recommend this order:
- Fix the technical basics — speed, mobile, indexation, and make sure you’re not accidentally blocking AI crawlers in
robots.txt. - Complete your Google Business Profile and make your name, address and phone identical everywhere.
- Rewrite your top 5–10 pages answer-first, with FAQ sections and schema.
- Run a baseline AI visibility check on 20–50 buyer prompts.
- Earn mentions in Malaysian publications, directories and roundups that AI cites in your category.
- Track monthly, in English and — where your buyers use them — Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese.
